Colored flags will be flown at Jamboree headquarters and base camp headquarters and colored placards displayed at program area headquarters to communicate heat conditions. In the event of Red or Black Flag conditions, an announcement will also be made over the Jamboree broadcast system.
The following color system will be used to communicate the current heat conditions:
- Green (Heat Index of 82 to 85 degrees F): Physical activities will be conducted with caution and under constant supervision. Staff will observe participants and leaders to ensure they are carrying water bottles. Drink at least ¼ to ½ quart of water per hour.
- Yellow (Heat Index of 85 to 88 degrees F): Staff will observe participants and other staff members for signs of dehydration or heat related illnesses. 10 minutes of rest will be taken for every 60 minutes of activity. Staff shall exercise discretion in limiting participation of anyone displaying signs of dehydration or heat-related illness in mountain biking, BMX and skateboarding program areas. Medical assistance will be called for any person displaying potential signs of heat related illness. Drink at least ½ to ¾ quart of water per hour.
- Red (Heat Index of 88 to 90 degrees F): Participants and staff should avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and be aware that some program activities may have a rapid adverse impact. 15 minutes of rest will be taken for every 45 minutes of activity. Medical assistance will be called for any person displaying potential signs of heat-related illness. If the Garden Ground Trek is underway, frequent water breaks will be taken. Drink at least ¾ to 1 full quart of water per hour.
- Black (Heat Index of 90 and above degrees F): All participants not actively involved in activities should remain under shade. 20 minutes of rest will be taken for every 30 minutes of activity. Medical assistance will be called for any person displaying potential signs of heat related illness. If the Garden Ground Trek is underway, frequent water breaks will be taken. Drink at least 1to 1¼ quarts of water per hour.
Cards summarizing flag conditions, hydration guidelines, severe storm procedures and the emergency warning system will be provided to every Jamboree participant and staff member.
Remember to keep hydrated! Staff, leaders and participants should always follow the Water Intake Guidelines and encourage others to do so as well.
