From the arena shows to watching their Scouts engaged in the program, Scout leaders will leave the jamboree with many positive memories.

Jerry Sheldon, Subcamp 11, Central Region, said his favorite memory was “seeing the Scouts totally excited and pumped when they came back to camp at the end of the day and wanted to tell about all that they had done.”

Eddie Wessell, Subcamp 12, Central Region, agreed.  “What other group (Scouters) in the United States will pay to come for two weeks just so (Scouts) could have a good time?”

Wayne Hamre, Subcamp 14, Central Region, Reggie McCue, Subcamp 15, Southern Region, and Will Bishop, Subcamp 9, Western Region,  all talked about the camaraderie of meeting Scouts from across the country and around the world.

Matt Morgan and Chuck Wayman, both from Subcamp 12, Central Region, said Saturday’s arena show was the “ah-hah” moment at the jamboree.  Russ Neubauer,  Subcamp 4, Northeast Region, said the arena event showed “the change that is making Scouting more relevant to today’s youth. “

Loaned vehicle return

Loaned vehicles may be returned immediately, and all vehicles must be returned by noon Thursday to the vehicle transportation lot. Exceptions must be cleared with the vehicle chairman or director at 404-405-9831.

Once returned, vehicles will be inspected for use and damage. If a vehicle is damaged, an accident report will need to be completed. If you haven’t filed an accident report for a damaged vehicle, you may visit the vehicle transportation lot at any time to complete the report. This will speed up the vehicle check-in process.

Hours for the vehicle transportation lot are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., today and Wednesday, and 5:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday.  For more information, contact John Laitar at 404-414-1357.

Vehicle departure

Authorized vehicles are permitted on the jamboree site. All traffic restrictions remain in effect and no vehicles are allowed on Thomas Road until noon Wednesday. In addition, to ensure the safety of Scouts and Scouters, no unauthorized vehicles will be allowed on the jamboree site until noon Wednesday. It is extremely important for safety reasons to restrict traffic to essential vehicles only until that time.

If any non-essential staff wish to depart tonight, you will need to find someone who has an authorized vehicle to take you and your gear to Archer dead storage.

You will need to load your vehicle with your gear and leave Fort A.P. Hill. You will not be allowed to drive your personal vehicle without an authorized sticker back into the jamboree site. This process must be completed by 8 tonight.

Troop equipment vehicles can move into the troop campsites from 5 to 7 tonight.

No movement of these vehicles is permitted after 8 tonight. Please be aware that no one is allowed to sleep in or within 10 feet of these vehicles, said Chris Wolfe, director of safety services.

Troop equipment vehicles will be allowed to finish loading equipment Wednesday morning and then must exit the jamboree site.

After Action reports

Youth and adults will receive a survey via e-mail after the jamboree. The surveys will be sent to the e-mail address you used to register. Responses should be returned via e-mail. The responses will be used for planning the 2013 jamboree. For more information, contact Pat Wellen at 469-236-6725.

Housing check out

Before staff leaves Fort A.P. Hill, you will need to check out of housing. Here are the steps to do that:

1. Make sure you check out of your work location with your chairperson.

2.  Go to your housing headquarters.

3.  Report the time you are leaving and sign the housing form.

Parting words from Safety

As our jamboree draws to a close, the Safety Services staff reminds us that it is important to keep our focus on having the safest jamboree ever. Safety is the responsibility of all of us, from the youngest Scout to the oldest Scouter or guest. We need to be vigilant in our efforts. It is easy for us to get in a hurry as our transport trucks await our gear or the bus awaits our boarding.

Think safe—take your time and follow your practiced procedures and tasks.

Let’s be good Scouts here at Fort A.P. Hill and leave your area better than you found it. Remove all your equipment, remove all your trash, and follow the guidelines outlined in the Jamboree Troop Leaders’ Guide with regards to the removal of gateways and other equipment.

Staff meal schedule

On Wednesday, subcamp staff will receive a “getaway” (non-perishable, non-refrigerated) breakfast distributed at the subcamps.

Staff eating in the Thomas Road, Mahone, Longstreet, and Wilcox dining halls will be given a quick breakfast from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m.

Wednesday kiosk lunches for staff still on site will be distributed at Heth Schoolhouse, Wilcox dining hall, and Longstreet dining hall from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Dinner on Wednesday will be served at Wilcox dining hall from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Thursday’s breakfast will be served at Wilcox dining hall from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m.

I. Troop Equipment Vehicles procedures for Tuesday, August 3:

Shuttle buses are scheduled to pick-up Troop Leadership (Equipment Vehicle Guides/Drivers) from Regional HQ’s, sub camp 20/21 fire station, and sub camp 14 entrance and Early drive at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, August 3.  Two separate shuttle buses will be delivering Troop leaders: one to Archer for equipment vehicle pick-up, and the other to the following gates to meet off base troop equipment vehicles when they arrive and guide them to their sub camp:

The following gates will be utilized and are only open from 4-7 PM, August 3

SOUTHERN REGION – Rappahannock
CENTRAL REGION – Villeboro
WESTERN REGION – North Main
NORTHEAST REGION – South Main

To enter these gates or move from Archer and enter the Jamboree sub camp areas, each equipment vehicle must display a demobilization placard that will be issued by each Regional headquarters. Regional headquarters will receive their placards from us prior to 12:00 noon, August 3rd. Equipment vehicles can be parked within a sub camp area overnight, but must be parked in such a way that they do not block any access road or inhibit the movement of pedestrians.  All such vehicles must be in place no later than 8pm, 3 August.  No equipment vehicles will be allowed to move after 8:00 pm, August 3 until 5:30 am, August 4th. Any equipment vehicle that plans to depart the base or return to Archer on August 3^rd must do so by 8:00 pm.  Only the Villeboro and North Main gates will be available for vehicles exiting the base, and only between the hours of 7-8 pm.

NO staff personal vehicle from Archer will be able to enter the Jamboree site until 12:00 noon, August 4th.

II. Procedures for Wednesday, August 4:

Shuttle buses are scheduled to begin picking up Troop Leadership (Equipment Vehicle Guides/Drivers and Assistant Scoutmasters) from Regional HQ’s, sub camp 20/21 fire station, sub camp 14 entrance and Early Drive at 4:00 am on Wednesday, August 4th.  Two separate shuttle buses will be delivering Troop leaders: one to Archer for equipment vehicle pick-up for equipment vehicle drivers, and the other to transport Assistant Scoutmasters to the following gates to meet off base troop equipment vehicles and troop buses when they arrive and guide them to the sub camps:

Hill Drive, beginning at 11:00 am on Wednesday, August 4th.  Staff picking up personal vehicles will not need demobilization placards to obtain their vehicle and return to the Jamboree area.

ANY NON STICKERED PERSONAL VEHICLE OR EQUIPMENT VEHICLE THAT LEAVES THE POST WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO RE-ENTER.

Three days later, upon returning to Subcamp 2, Cory had a wonderful surprise. His wallet was waiting for him and all of its contents were intact. Since Cory’s ID was in the wallet, Lost and Found was able to identify his subcamp and forward the property there.

This is not the only story about property and money being returned intact and it is a tribute to the Scouts at the jamboree. They live the law—A Scout is trustworthy.

At the 2001 jamboree, a bag of patches appeared again.  After the jamboree, Ulf sent a letter to the Chief Scout Executive asking him to help solve the mystery of the donor.  Hoglind was put in touch with the anonymous donor and they met at the 2005 jamboree.  Unfortunately, Ulf lost his contact information and was hoping to meet him again at this jamboree.  He remembers this Scouter was from the Chief Seattle Council, in his mid-40s, and had a Swedish wife.  Anyone with information should contact Ulf at Subcamp 7, Troop 713, where he is a unit leader.

“I don’t want to see you sitting around camp or along the roadside trading patches,” Hoglind tells his Swedish Scouts.  “In the daytime, go out and do merit badges or do activities. This is like Christmas.  It is a chance of a lifetime. Make the most of it.”

Other members of the Swedish contingent are here taking notes for the 22nd World Scout Jamboree ,to take place in Skane, Sweden from July 27—August 7, 2011. The theme is ‘Simply Sensational Scouting,’ and about 40,000 Scouts from around the world are expected to attend.  Camp there will be more compact than this jamboree, with no need for cars or buses to get around.  Big military tents will house 12-14 scouts.  All foreign scouts will be assigned to a smaller camp of no more than 300 for one or two nights so they can experience the countryside and see camping as the local scouts see it.

Army Drill Team: The U.S. Army Drill Team has earned international acclaim through its breathtaking routines with bayonet-tipped 1903 Springfield rifles.  Organized to support The Old Guard’s ceremonial commitments, the Drill Team has thrilled millions of youngsters and proud Americans for more than 50 years with their daring and complex performances.

Army Field Band, Volunteers: The Volunteers is the United States Army’s premier touring show band.  Performances by the Volunteers have been described as “outstanding entertainment with energy and inspiration.”  We are sure every Scout will enjoy their exciting blend of popular American music, including rock ‘n’ roll, standards, country, jazz, and patriotic.

FORSCOM, Army Ground Forces Band: The Army Ground Forces Band provides world-class music in support of the U.S. Army Forces Command, headquartered at Ft. McPherson in Atlanta, Ga.  Their Hip Hop style of music serves as the musical ambassador of the American Combat Soldier to the American people.

Jamboree’s Got Talent: This show will feature Scouts that audition for the Alumni Event on July 27 and 28.  Performers will be selected for the Alumi Event show on July 30 and for these regional stage shows on August 3.  Come out and see some our talented Scouts perform for you on the Regional Stages.

Rock Band: Release your inner rock star and play the game Rock Band on a regional stage in front of thousands of screaming fans.  Bring your band mates and sign up for a spot.  The list will be kept by the regional stage manager for each stage.  Space is limited, so get signed up and have some Rock Band fun.

All Scouts and Scouters should take a moment throughout the day to thank military personnel for their service in making this a safe jamboree and for their service to our country.

The 2013 National Scout Jamboree will be held at The Summit Bechtel Family National Scouting Reserve, located about 20 minutes from Beckley, West Virginia.  This 10,600 acre site, bordered on three sides by the New River Gorge National River, is being crafted by Scouting for Scouting.

Surveys are underway to determine what Scouts want in a jamboree.  The results will be used to develop the site and the program. Scouts can learn more and share their comments at http://www.facebook.com/TheBechtelSummit.

The site will hold 40,000 Scouts and 10,000 adults in 2013.

Construction is under way in West Virginia.  All timbering is nearly complete and roads are 60 percent designed.  Paving for the roads is being produced on-site by crushing 416 tons of granite into gravel. Phase 1 of the construction plan will be complete by the 2013 jamboree, but phases 2 and 3 will continue for at least 10 more years until the final configuration is achieved. A high-adventure base and permanent summer camp will be included in these phases. When complete, the maximum grade change will be no more than 5 percent, so there will be no major physical challenges in getting around the camp.

Attendees at the 2013 jamboree can expect a completely different jamboree experience than in the past. The footprint for the jamboree site will be smaller than past jamborees, which is in keeping with ecological considerations, but there will be more area dedicated to program areas. Accommodations may be spartan in 2013, but improvements will continue afterwards.

In addition to the present property, surrounding land will be purchased over the years.  BSA is also working with the National Park Service to help develop the New River Gorge National River so that the adjacent 70,000 acres of the National Park Service property will be developed with Scouting in mind.

Representatives from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the Virginia State Police (VSP) will be on hand to keep traffic delays to a minimum as you exit Fort A.P. Hill Wednesday onto the surrounding major highways.

Sgt. Thomas Molnar, VSP, said electronic message boards and signs will provide directional information and will be placed at key exit locations.

“We will be on hand to direct traffic safely and as quickly as possible,” said Molnar.

Portable traffic cameras will monitor traffic conditions and can be viewed online at www.511virginia.org or at www.trafficland.com.

VDOT and VSP will monitor traffic along the I-95 corridor and on other major highways in the area, and will address traffic issues and traffic signal timing as needed.

According to the regional chef for Eurest Dining Services, 11,000 eggs will be used per day.

It took 1,000 cows over six weeks to produce the 300,000 gallons of milk consumed at the jamboree.

Jamboree kitchens will serve more than 1.2 million pounds of ice and 85,000 bananas.

Jamboree residents (Scouts, Scouters, and staff) may have an additional opportunity to visit Technology Quest from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. based on program availability and crowd size.  Technology Quest is not open to the general public.

Army Band, Downrange: The U.S. Army Band Downrange is the popular music ensemble of The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own.” With its own unique and ever-changing repertoire, Downrange directs the spotlight on this dynamic group of active-duty musicians—talented vocalists and a powerful rhythm section.

Join Mac King for an hour of magic, comedy and great fun.  The first 100 Scouts to appear at the stage that Mac is performing at on the night of his performance will receive a copy of his new book, “Campfire Magic”.

Mana of Hawaii: Mana means “spirit”.  This dynamic group will showcase the Scouting “Mana” of Hawaii (which is also celebrating 100 years of scouting in the Aloha Council) through Polynesian drumming, music and dance.  This presentation will include the spectacular Samoan Fire knife and intricate Navajo 22 hoop dances.

Trinidad and Tobago Steel Band: Come and join this group of Scouts from Trinidad and Tobago as they perform traditional steel band and calypso music.

Vex Robotics: The VEX Robotics Design System offers students an exciting platform for learning about areas rich with career opportunities spanning science, technology, engineering and math.  On the Jamboree stage, VEX robots will amaze and entertain you with their unique talents.  Some of the robots will be giving away t-shirts and/or nerf footballs to the Scouts in the crowd.  Get ready for some robot fun!

USCG Dixieland Band: The United States Coast Guard Dixieland Jazz Band was organized in 1970 to perform classic jazz, blues, and rags with a “New Orleans” flavor. The Dixieland Jazz Band has entertained audiences across America, in the former Soviet Union and in England.

Virginia National Guard Band: The Band has been in existence since 1922, and has served the Commonwealth of Virginia and the nation with distinction. The unit history spans from action in World War II to present-day.  Join the VaNG band for some rock and roll music.

The 11th point of the Scout Law states that a Scout is clean.  One way everyone at jamboree can demonstrate this point is by picking up trash around Fort A.P. Hill.  Be conscious of our environment in accordance with the Leave No Trace tenets and the principles of ecological awareness. Plan to leave Fort A.P. Hill better and cleaner than we found it.  If you see an empty container, waste paper, or other disposable items on the ground, pick them up and dispose of them properly.  Don’t wait for someone else to do it—do it yourself.  Cleanliness is everyone’s job.

We can all help by creating less trash to start with and not disposing of trash in just a few areas.  For example, the trash bins near the lunch kiosks typically get the majority of trash.  If you pack your lunch disposables back to your subcamps, there will be a more even distribution of trash and the bins near the kiosks won’t be overflowing. Another small thing we can do that will be a major help is to remove the caps of disposable water bottles and crush the bottles before throwing them away.  This action will reduce the volume of trash and alleviate the overflow of trash on site, plus save money in disposal fees.

Trash pickups are done on a regular schedule, although the Thomas Road area is particularly difficult because trucks cannot drive on that road during the day.  However, if an extra pick up is required, call Maintenance Control Services at 540-850-4357.

SummitCorps, which begins July 3, 2011, will be a four-week long effort to begin building the new jamboree site in West Virginia. The event will be run like ArrowCorps5.  The OA will clear trails and begin carving out the infrastructure for the new site.  It is exciting for the OA to take an active part in building our new jamboree site.  For more information, contact Drate Berry at 903-720-4502.

Jamboree Band: Get ready for the Scouts of the Jamboree Band. This special concert group will feature Scout musicians from around the country.

Lost and Found: Lost and Found is the music duo of Michael Bridges and George Baum. They were Boy Scouts for a short time as youth and worked as summer camp staff. Sponsored by the National Lutheran Association on Scouting, come and join this music group and be inspired by their brand of music and honest fun.

Marine Band, Free Country: “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band, perform for more than 300 White House and more than 500 public and official performances each year.

Join us for Free Country, the Marine Band’s contemporary country music ensemble for some great Country music performed by the Band that performs for the President of the United States.

Navy Band, Cruisers: As the U.S. Navy’s premier contemporary entertainment ensemble, the Cruisers feature eight of the Navy’s most dynamic performers. The group takes its name from the Navy’s versatile, flexible, multi-missioned ship – the Cruiser – and the band lives up to their namesake by having the capabilities of playing genres of music ranging from jazz & standards, rhythm & blues, classic rock, adult contemporary and pop as well as original material.

Sarah Centeno: Sarah is 14 years old and is from San Antonio, Texas. She has been singing since she was 5 years old and loves to perform and entertain. She has performed as a part of our 100 year celebration with Adventure Base 100 and will perform as a part of one of the Arena Shows. She is a great singer and entertainer.

Jet flyovers, celebrity appearances, music, dance performances, and various videos highlight Saturday’s Centennial Celebration arena show, a celebration unlike any other in jamboree history.

The arena opens at 4:30 p.m. with music from QBSA (102.9 FM) along with safety messages showing on the big screen.  Pre-show begins at 5:25 p.m. with an F-15 flyover and steel drum performance by Trinidad and Tobago. T-shirt prizes will be shot out of cannons as Scouts enter the arena.

The show starts at 8 p.m. as cauldrons are lit.

Chief Scout Executive Bob Mazzuca will give a presentation, entitled  “Celebrate The Future of BSA.” Highlights of the show include an appearance by Eagle Scout Mike Rowe, host of Discovery Channel’s Dirty Jobs, music from Switchfoot, and a spectacular fireworks display.  The show is scheduled to end at 10:20 p.m.

Everyone attending the show needs to be properly hydrated.

Dinner on Saturday will be similar to a lunch kiosk meal.  Troops and subcamp staff will receive their dinner with the breakfast delivery Saturday morning.  Staff who eat at the dining halls will pick up their dinner during breakfast at their assigned dining hall. Staff who miss breakfast can pick up their dinner between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. at Wilcox and Longstreet dining halls, or from the large truck on the south side of the Heth Schoolhouse.
