‘Bee’ prepared

Normally quiet insects, bees sometimes get aggressive when their territory is threatened. With nearly 50,000 Scouts and Scouters at Fort A.P. Hill, we are a threat to bees.

If you see bees, report them to your subcamp staff.

Instruct your Scouts to stay away from these areas. If stung, scrape off the stinger if a stinger is present. Usually only honey bees and a couple other species have stingers. You should then sit down, keep quiet, and apply ice to the sting area.

Buddy system

Please follow the rules of S.A.F.E.T.Y., particularly the letter A: Always have a buddy.

Scouts and Scouters have this information on page 36 of your Scout Guide and on your green hangtag.

There are many Scouts around the jamboree who are walking without buddies. A buddy is for a Scout’s safety. Remind Scouts to find a buddy and keep one with them as they walk around jamboree.

When you leave your troop site, hike with one or two buddies. Stay on designated trails and walkways, and follow instructions of traffic and safety personnel.

Patches for hospitalized Scouts

Jamboree chaplains stay 24-hours a day with any Scout who is hospitalized offsite, and visit twice daily any Scout at Jambo General. The chaplains have been offering the Scouts patches as a way to “break the ice” and start a dialogue.

If you have extra patches that you would be willing to contribute to this effort, please drop them off at the chaplain’s tent by the entrance to Merit Badge Midway. For more information, call Kleet Barclay at 334-430-3356.

Jambo chaplains serve all faiths

More than 140 chaplains representing every major faith are at Fort A.P. Hill.

The chaplains believe that the jamboree offers profound proof of the diversity in Scouting and each is prepared to serve many denominations and faiths.  Indicative of this approach, their nameplates do not designate their religion or denomination. A reason for this ecumenical approach is that if you need counseling or if you’re homesick, it doesn’t matter what religion you are or whether you’re a Scout or Scout leader. Continue reading

Safety tips for Friday’s 5K fun run

Be safe in Friday’s 5K fun run to be held in each region. Know your limits and measure your pace with the endurance and performance guides you should have established from prior runs and walks.  If you have never participated, don’t overdo your capability.  Start early and find others in your own class.

Make sure you hydrate and wear apparel that breaths and doesn’t hold the perspiration. Wear shoes that you have run or walked in before.  Don’t try to break in a pair that you have never worn.  Wear socks that will protect your feet.  Have fun meeting other Scouters and Scouts and enjoy the scenery.  Most of all know yourself.

Foot hygiene

Guidelines to avoid foot problems:

  • Wash feet with soap and water at least once a day, with extra attention between the toes and under nails.
  • Feet should be thoroughly dried and aired before putting on clean socks.
  • If your feet perspire a great deal, use foot powder at least twice a day.
  • Shoes should not be so large that the foot moves inside the shoe.
  • There should not be any pressure points or binding spots.
  • Clean socks should be worn daily.
  • Wear large enough socks to allow the toes to remain straight, but tight enough to minimize wrinkling.
  • Socks with holes may cause blisters and should be discarded.

For more information, contact Lt. Col. Lisa A. Forsyth at 210-569-2535.

They’re everywhere. In the shade. On a small piece of land. In front of tents. Coming in all shapes, sizes and ages, they form groups, sometimes hordes. Furious trading occurs. They are the jamboree patch traders.

Walking may be faster than riding the shuttle bus

The jamboree is a great walking event.  The yellow shuttle buses are provided for the convenience of jamboree participants and staff, but at times the waiting line and slow travel speeds make the ride very long.  Therefore, for much of the time, it may be quicker for participants to reach many, if not most, destinations by walking.
